"New Year's Eve" Acrylic on canvas. Size 92x73cm.
It's an icy cold New Year's night. The girl with the matches walks the street, she has not sold a single one, and she does not dare go home. So she sits in a corner between two houses. The snow is falling and oh, what a little match would be warm and nice. So she lights a stick. And in the light of the fire she sees the most beautiful things. When the stick goes out, the image disappears. So she lights another one. And one more. The flame fades, she sees a falling star in the sky. Now it's one who dies, the girl says to herself, because her grandmother always used to say that, when she was alive. Then she lights another stick. And in the gentle light she sees her grandmother - quickly she sets fire to all the remaining sticks at the same time, hoping that the vision of her grandmother will not disappear. The fire shines brighter and brighter than ever before, and the grandmother picks up the little girl in her arms. Together they lift up into the night sky. In the morning, the little girl, frozen to death in the corner between the houses, is found with a smile on her face and the burnt-out matches at her feet.
Painted with inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen's wonderful fairy tale "The little match girl".
The painting has details in gold and silver and a small crystal is attached to the shooting star.
